A Guide to Hair Care in Pregnancy from JDH Salon & Spa in Aberdeen and Glasgow
Congratulations if you are expecting a baby! Although this is an exciting time for mothers-to-be, pregnancy also can have its share of challenges.
Some expectant mums sail through pregnancy with a radiant glow, while others suffer from morning sickness, heartburn, fatigue and swollen ankles – to name but a few pregnancy ailments.
At James Dun’s House Salon & Spa in Aberdeen and Glasgow we also recognise that the hormone fluctuations that come with pregnancy can change your hair. You may also have your own hair concerns such as ‘can I dye my hair when pregnant?’ and ‘are hair smoothing chemicals and perms safe for pregnant women?’
If in any doubt, please consult your GP with your pregnancy issues or concerns.
Can I Dye My Hair When Pregnant?
Most mums-to-be prefer to wait until their second trimester – the 12th to 13th week of pregnancy – before applying colour to their hair.
However, according to the NHS, it is probably safe to colour your hair when pregnant as the level of chemical coming into contact with your scalp is low.
Check out the NHS’s guidelines on colouring your hair when pregnant here.
If you decide to colour your hair while pregnant, consider highlights, lowlights or semi-permanent dyes during pregnancy rather than a full head of hair colour. These treatments will have less contact with your skin and create fewer chemical fumes.
Similar NHS advice exists if you want any hair treatment that uses chemicals such as a perm, straightening or smoothing hair treatment while pregnant.

Problem Hair During Pregnancy
If you’re enjoying thick, glossy, luxurious hair during pregnancy this is down to the higher levels of oestrogen in your body which prolong the hair growth phase. Just look at the beautiful hairstyles on pregnant superstar Beyonce, pregnant Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton and fashionista Kim Kardashian who teased her fringe into a cute quiff for some pregnancy glamour!
On the downside, your fluctuating hormones can also cause havoc with your hair. Mums to be experience different issues. Some find their hair becomes unusually greasy, while others have dry and brittle hair. If your hair becomes unruly and unmanageable please come and talk to our professional hairstyling team at JDH Hair Salon in Aberdeen and Glasgow for advice.
And once the baby arrives, some women experience hair loss. Again, do come and talk to our experts at JDH Salon for help and advice.
